Situated on the Great North road to Zimbabwe, Polokwane is the heart of the Limpopo Province. It’s a peaceful, yet progressive city and its name literally means ‘place of safety’.
The city is also the gateway to the other SADC countries which lie on its border – offering easy access to Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. And, just east of the city, is the world-renowned Kruger National Park and the scenic Magoebaskloof.
Polokwane is rich with a diverse mix of ethnic and cultural groups, such as Pedi, Venda, Tsonga, Ndebele, Afrikaners and English. Yet all embrace and share a common, warm and friendly philosophy of “motho ke motho ka batho” meaning “you are a human being because of other human beings.”
The city and its surrounding areas boast the world’s largest reserves of platinum metals, chrome and vanadium, as well as copper, nickel, iron ore and titanium. It is also one of South Africa’s richest agricultural regions, with vegetables being the most significant crop. All the agricultural commodities produced in the province are sold at affordable prices to the people throughout the city’s market places.
For those adverse to winter weather, the climate here is ideal - with almost year-round sunshine, clear star-lit skies and clean air – perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. This pleasant climate and the altitude also make Polokwane a top choice as a soccer base camp and training area. – and for the fans to catch all their favourite 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer ‘stars’ in action under the stars!
The open, vast thornveld of the city’s plateau – at 1280m above sea level - supports a great variety of both Bushveld and Kalahari-type birds. Typical species here include Crimson-breasted Shrike, African Wren-Warbler, Short-clawed Lark and Black-faced Waxbill.
The city’s monuments and heritage sites are many and perfectly preserved to reflect the sense of great civic pride, responsibility and strong partnership ethos between the government and its citizens.
For business and incentive travellers, Polokwane has excellent conference and team building facilities – and is also the commercial and administrative hub of the province.
Eco and nature lovers will relish and enjoy the many nature and game reserves within easy reach from the city. The natural environment is one of the world’s richest in terms of biodiversity, wildlife and archaeological sites and popular tourism attractions for visitors from across the globe.
Visiting this naturally progressive city and its surrounds will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed as you escape the rat race and immerse yourself in its comfortable, welcoming and beautiful environment!
