Introduction
Polokwane Municipality was inaugurated on 15
December 2000. The Polokwane Municipality is an
Executive Mayoral System constituted on 15 December
2000. It consist of 69 councillors. Thirty-five are
elected Ward councillors and the rest represent
political parties in their different proportional
election lists. The Municipality has ten members of
the Mayoral Committee appointed by the Executive
Mayor. Polokwane Municipality has ten Portfolio
committees. Each of the ten members of the Mayoral
Committee chairs a special Portfolio Committee and
reports their activities to the Executive Mayor. The
Executive Mayor then reports to Council during the
Council meetings. Council meetings are open to the
public.
The ruling party, the African National Congress
has an overwhelming majority in Council. Due to the
recent floor crossing period , the ANC increased its
majority. Only Four political parties are now left
in council, the Democratic Alliance (DA) the Azanian People’s Organization (AZAPO) the United
Democratic Movement (UDM) and the African Christian
Democratic Party (ACDP).
Polokwane Municipality
holds its council meetings quarterly on average.
Mayoral Committee meetings are held fortnightly
while Portfolio Committee meetings are held once a
month. The Council meetings are chaired by the
Speaker.
