BACKGROUND

The Town Groblersdal was established in 1938, it is situated on the Klipbank farm and named after the owner. W.J. Grobler. The District of Groblersdal is an important area with fertile land. Groblersdal benefits from the easy availability of water because of its location in the Olifants river area.

Groblersdal is a beautiful, relaxed town with attractive sports facilities, schools with hostels, all church denominations, a provincial hospital and ambulance service, all medical and welfare facilities, low municipal rates and a low crime rate.

Balmy summers, mild winters and residential areas covered in natural indigenous trees and shrubs are just a few of the attractions.

LOCATION

It is situated on the western banks of the Olifants River, 160km North-East of Pretoria and 32km from the well-known Loskop Dam.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS CULTIVATED

Owning to its location in the Olifants River irrigation area below the Loskopdam, Groblersdal benefits fully from the availability of water. Intensive agricultural activities under 5 irrigation schemes cover a total surface area of 28 800 ha.

Groblersdal is the centre of a progressive farming community because of the town’s fortunate location. The following products are cultivated here.

  • Grapes.
  • Wheat.
  • Tobacco.
  • Maize.
  • Soya beans.
  • Citrus fruits.
  • Cotton.
  • Vegetables.

The gross agricultural production of the district is estimated at approximately R250 million per annum.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

Groblersdal maintained a growth rate of around 8% since 1991. Groblersdal is certainly one of the most progressive local authorities in the country. More than 35 national retail groups as well as the major banks and building societies are well represented in the town.

According to the Municipal Demarcation Board the total population of Greater Groblersdal Municipality is approximately 220748 people compared to 218761 in 1996. The slight increase of less than 1% in population growth compared to x% of national growth can be attributed to a number of reasons amongst them the migration of people to cities and areas with job opportunities.

CLIMATE

Groblersdal have an average day temperature of 28°C and a night temperature of 18°C during the summer. It temperatures during winter is ± 22°C during a winters day and during the night ± 8°C.

The rainfall season is during October to March each year and it has an average rain fall of 700mm per year.

The Elands-, Olifants- and Moos Rivers flow through the area and the Loskop Dam is situated ± 32km from the town.

Greater Groblersdal is ± 920 metres above sea level.

TOURISM AND PLEASURE

The Loskopdam Aventura resort and Nature Reserve feature amongst the most popular tourist attractions in South Africa. A nature reserve housing a large variety of game and bird species may be visited with the permission of the Town Council. The Loskop Valley captures the summer sun to provide year-round climate for boating, hiking, and riding with the added bonus of viewing a wide variety of game. The game farms are open to hunters and bow-hunters at certain times of the year.

Tourism is what we have had till now and it has been a well kept secret. That, however, has now changed in a way, and the Greater Marble Hall Tourism Organisation opened its doors in September 2000.
