POLOKWANE ELECTRICITY CONSERVATION PROGRAMME

In terms of the National Electricity Emergency Plan, electricity consumers must use electricity in such a way as to reduce the load on the national electricity system by at least 10 %.In order to achieve a 10 % saving on the Polokwane load, the Polokwane Council has approved an Electricity Conservation Programme which requires the following savings from the different category consumers, especially during Eskom peak demand time, 06:00 to 21:00 week days:

·        Industrial customers                                                    12,5 %

·        Commercial (general)                                                   1 8,75 %

·        Hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and                           25 %

Conference centres

·        Residential                                                                 12,5 %

·        Agricultural                                                                 6,25 %

·        Special cases (hospitals, clinics, emergency                     no target

Centres)                                                                   (use sparingly)

                        Non-Residential Consumers

Non-residential electricity consumers are expected to achieve their savings by innovative adaptation of production processes, operation of air conditioning systems at higher than usual temperatures, using energy efficient lighting, and all other means to use electricity more efficiently and sparingly.Lights in areas not in use should be switched off at all times. Plans must also be put in place to ensure that all lights, where possible, are switched off after business hours.

Residential Consumers

Residential consumers contribute 37 % of the total electricity demand during peak period in South Africa. They can therefore make a huge reduction in electricity demand, and at the same time save money, when reducing their electricity load.  A few easy methods how it can be done immediately:

Switch Off Your Geyser Between 06:00 and 21:00.

If everybody in South Africa switches off their geysers during the Eskom peak demand period, it creates the same capacity as one complete Eskom power station on the system.  When switching the geyser off during peak times, you will hardly experience any difference in water temperature, yet you will make a large contribution towards electricity saving.A geyser contributes about 40 % of a household’s electricity consumption.Consider the installation of a Solar Water heater.

Swimming Pool

Set your swimming pool motor to work at night (after 21h00).  Swimming pool motors only need to operate 6 to 7 hours per day during summer months.

Geyser Blanket

Cover your geyser in a geyser blanket to reduce convection heat losses.

Switch Off Lights Not In Use

Install energy saving Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL’s) in the place of incandescent lamps.

Set Air Conditioner 3 Degrees Higher Than Usual

Air conditioners are high energy consuming appliances and can save lots of energy when used with discretion.  At a setting of 3 degrees higher than usual, conditions are still fairly comfortable.

Keep Fridge Door Shut

The fridge temperature increases every second the door is open and needs lots of energy to cool it down again.  Also make sure that the door seals properly.

Use Stove Sparingly

Rather use a micro wave oven, where possible.  The stove and oven use a huge amount of energy. Consider changing to a gas stove.

Do not Use Tumble Driers

Do your clothes washing early morning before 06:00 if possible.A tumble drier consumes a tremendous amount of power.  Rather dry your clothes on the washing line.

Dishwashers

Dishwashers should only be switched on after 21:00.
