The City of Polokwane today prides itself with the magnificent hosting of the last 2010 FIFA World Cup™ match between Paraguay and New Zealand on 24 June 2010 at the newly built Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. The game ended in a stalemate with the Kiwi’s dream of their first ever last 16 knock out stages participation having been dealt a blow. The other matches played in Polokwane were Algeria vs Slovenia, France against Mexico and Argentina which took on Greece.
The highest attendance of all the games went to France vs Mexico with over 45 000 fans at the stadium followed by Argentina vs Greece which was almost 39 000.
Polokwane will never be the same again as it was at some stage during Mexico vs France invaded by the Mexicans with their trademark hats and their tequilas, Argentineans who had a glorious time and received a warm welcome from the people of Polokwane who kept them entertained throughout the night in various entertainment areas.
The Polokwane FIFA FAN FEST at the cricket club has been visited by thousands of fans where in the highest records of attendance were on matches were Bafana Bafana were playing. 23 000 was recorded for the opening, 12 000 and 13 500 respectively. The FIFA FAN FEST was the place where different nations and cultures united, now we invite the people of Polokwane to continue celebrating the soccer festivities at the FIFA FAN FEST. Fans commented that it is much more enjoyable watching the game on the giant screen than on the telly at home with almost everyone stating that the Fan Fest is well organized and safe.
“Now that we have come to the end of live matches at Peter Mokaba Stadium and the focus will be on the FIFA FAN FEST, it is critical that the fans are encouraged to visit and be entertained through football and music, and be able to win prizes throughout until the 11 July 2010” said Ndavhe Ramakuela, 2010 Director.
“The long held dream of the people of Polokwane and Limpopo has now turned into a reality, a reality that will always encourage us to do more in keeping the magnificent facility in good shape,” said Executive Mayor of Polokwane Municipality, Thabo Makunyane.
The people of Limpopo Province and Polokwane in particular have demonstrated through their support, attendance of the games and FIFA FAN FEST that the Host City of Polokwane took its rightful place amongst the other Host Cities in the country.
